Hydrogen
Inhalation Therapy
The smallest known molecule. Delivered through the lungs. Reaching every cell — including those across the blood-brain barrier — within seconds of inhalation.
Smaller than any cell.
Larger than any supplement.
Molecular hydrogen (H₂) is the most fundamental molecule in the universe — two hydrogen atoms, 0.289 nanometres in diameter. This extraordinary smallness is not merely a curiosity: it is the property that makes H₂ the only known antioxidant capable of penetrating every biological barrier in the human body without requiring active transport proteins or metabolic conversion.
Vitamins C and E — widely considered effective antioxidants — cannot cross the blood-brain barrier. They are too large to pass through cell membranes without assistance. H₂ passes through both freely, reaching the mitochondria and nucleus of every cell in the body within minutes of entering the bloodstream.

Pure H₂ enters the respiratory tract
Medical-grade pure molecular hydrogen gas is delivered through a nasal cannula or lightweight mask at a controlled flow rate. The hydrogen immediately mixes with ambient oxygen in the airway — the precise concentration is calibrated to remain safe while delivering therapeutic levels of H₂ to the alveolar surface.
Alveolar absorption delivers systemic distribution
At the alveolar surface — the gas-exchange membrane of the lungs — H₂ molecules cross directly into the pulmonary capillary blood supply. The molecule's small size enables passive diffusion without carrier proteins. Once in blood, H₂ distributes to all tissues within the normal circulation time of 60–90 seconds — reaching muscle, liver, kidney, heart, and brain simultaneously.
The blood-brain barrier is crossed freely
The blood-brain barrier (BBB) is one of the most selective membranes in biology — excluding the vast majority of therapeutically active molecules to protect neural tissue. Molecular hydrogen is among a small class of molecules — alongside oxygen and carbon dioxide — that crosses the BBB passively via simple diffusion. This makes H₂ inhalation uniquely effective for neurological recovery, cognitive restoration, and neuroprotective intervention.
Selective neutralisation of damaging free radicals
Within neural and peripheral tissue, H₂ reacts selectively with the hydroxyl radical (·OH) — the most reactive and destructive ROS in biology — and peroxynitrite (ONOO⁻), a species implicated in neurodegenerative processes. The reaction produces water as the only by-product. Critically, H₂ does not react with hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) or superoxide (O₂⁻), which serve as necessary signalling molecules in normal immune and metabolic function.
Mental clarity and cognitive restoration emerge
With oxidative burden reduced across neural tissue, mitochondrial ATP production in neurons normalises. Neuroinflammatory signalling cascades — often driven by hydroxyl radical excess — diminish. Guests consistently report improved cognitive sharpness, mood elevation, and a quality of mental clarity often described as heightened presence, following a 20–40 minute inhalation session.
Inhalation and bath therapy
are complementary, not competing.
The brain clears.
The mind sharpens.
Neural tissue is disproportionately vulnerable to oxidative damage. The brain consumes approximately 20% of the body's oxygen supply despite comprising only 2% of body weight — generating a corresponding volume of reactive by-products. When hydroxyl radical accumulation in neural tissue exceeds the brain's endogenous antioxidant capacity, cognitive function degrades: processing speed slows, attentional bandwidth narrows, and the quality of executive function diminishes.
Hydrogen inhalation resolves this imbalance directly. By delivering H₂ across the blood-brain barrier within seconds, the session reverses the neural oxidative load, restores mitochondrial efficiency in neurons, and allows the brain's endogenous antioxidant systems to reset to baseline. The result is a quality of mental clarity and cognitive presence that guests regularly describe as unlike anything achievable through sleep, caffeine, or conventional recovery methods.
- — Heightened cognitive sharpness and processing clarity
- — Reduction in cognitive fatigue and mental fog
- — Mood elevation through reduced neuroinflammation
- — Improved quality of sleep following the session
- — Accelerated post-exercise neural recovery
- — Systemic anti-inflammatory biomarker reduction
Medical-grade purity.
Zero known adverse effects.
Hydrogen inhalation therapy delivered at Maji uses certified medical-grade H₂ gas — free of any contaminants — at concentrations scientifically established as safe for inhalation. Molecular hydrogen is non-toxic, non-flammable at therapeutic concentrations, and produces no free-radical by-products. No peer-reviewed study to date has identified adverse side effects from therapeutic hydrogen inhalation at concentrations below 4% in ambient air. Maji's inhalation protocol operates well within this established safety range.
Guests with respiratory conditions, cardiovascular concerns, or those currently pregnant are invited to consult with our team before their first session, to ensure the inhalation protocol is appropriately calibrated.

Breathe in. Let the molecule work.
Hydrogen inhalation sessions at Maji are available daily, individually or as part of the full thermal circuit. Sessions run 20–40 minutes and are frequently combined with the stone hydrogen bath for comprehensive H₂ coverage.
