Why sequence matters

The body responds to
deliberate thermal stress.

Thermal contrast therapy operates on a foundational principle: the body's adaptive response to controlled physiological stress is far more powerful than rest alone. When heat and cold are applied in deliberate sequence, the body triggers cascades of hormetic adaptation — releasing heat shock proteins, norepinephrine, growth hormone, and endorphins that collectively accelerate tissue repair, reduce inflammation, and recalibrate the nervous system.

At Maji, this sequence is not left to chance. The thermal journey follows a clinically informed progression — from peak thermal load to cold-shock response to molecular restoration — with each phase building directly on the biochemical state created by the last.

"Hormesis is the mechanism by which controlled stress produces disproportionate physiological benefit."

— Principle of Adaptive Biology

Phase 01 Duration: 10–20 minutes

Heat:
Open, Prime, Activate.

The thermal journey begins with a heat source — Finnish Sauna, Russian Banya, or Hammam. Each delivers heat through a distinct mechanism, but all share the same core physiological effect: elevating core body temperature to 38–42°C.

At this temperature, the body begins expressing heat shock proteins (HSPs) — molecular chaperones that repair misfolded proteins, protect cells from further stress, and accelerate post-exercise recovery. Blood volume at the skin surface increases dramatically, vasodilating peripheral vessels and beginning the process of deep tissue flushing.

Simultaneously, growth hormone secretion surges — with sauna sessions demonstrated to increase GH levels by up to 200–300% above baseline. The musculoskeletal system softens under sustained heat, releasing deeply held tension in connective tissue, fascia, and muscle belly.

Finnish Sauna

Dry radiant heat at 80–100°C. Penetrates tissue rapidly. Triggers maximal sweating response and heat shock protein cascade. Delivers mental stillness through sympathetic shutdown.

Russian Banya

Humid heat at 60–80°C amplified by parilka steam rituals. Venik branch massage drives circulation and exfoliates deeply. Presided over by an expert Steammaster.

Hammam

Slow-penetrating steam at 40–55°C softens bone structure and primes skin for full-body kese exfoliation. Ideal for those beginning the thermal sequence for the first time.

Cold:
Constrict, Flush, Adapt.

Immediately following heat exposure, full or partial immersion in the cold plunge pool initiates a rapid and powerful vascular response. Blood vessels in the skin and extremities constrict sharply — forcing warm, oxygen-rich blood to retreat into the body's core and vital organs.

Cold exposure of this magnitude triggers a 200–300% surge in norepinephrine — a neurotransmitter and hormone that simultaneously elevates mood, sharpens focus, suppresses pain perception, and activates brown adipose tissue to accelerate metabolic rate. Cold shock proteins are expressed within minutes, directly complementing the heat shock proteins activated in Phase 1.

Exiting the cold plunge initiates the rebound: peripheral vessels dilate rapidly, flooding extremities with the now-concentrated circulatory blood. Muscle spasm dissolves. The nervous system transitions from a state of acute stress response to deep physiological calm.

Phase 03 Duration: 20–40 minutes

Restore:
Neutralise, Repair, Rebuild.

The final — and most distinctive — phase of the Maji thermal journey is molecular hydrogen restoration. Following the thermal stress of Phase 1 and the vascular shock of Phase 2, cells throughout the body carry an elevated oxidative load: an excess of reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated by intense physiological activity.

Molecular hydrogen (H₂) selectively and precisely neutralises the most destructive ROS — specifically the hydroxyl radical (·OH) and peroxynitrite (ONOO⁻) — converting them harmlessly to water. This occurs without disrupting the beneficial ROS that govern normal cellular signalling and immune function.

At Maji, molecular hydrogen is delivered through two complementary pathways: the stone hydrogen bath, where warm water supersaturated with H₂ allows transdermal absorption directly into tissue; and the hydrogen inhalation session, where H₂ enters the bloodstream via the lungs, reaches the brain within seconds, and begins systemic antioxidant action within minutes.

H₂

Target Hydroxyl Radical (·OH), Peroxynitrite (ONOO⁻)
Mechanism Selective antioxidation — converts ROS to H₂O
Molecule Size 0.289 nm — crosses all biological barriers
Routes Transdermal (Bath), Pulmonary (Inhalation)

Common Questions

Everything you need
before your first visit.

First-time visitors typically complete one to two full heat-cold cycles. Experienced practitioners at Maji often complete three to four cycles, with each complete contrast cycle lasting approximately 20–30 minutes. The key is listening to your body — the thermal circuit should feel challenging but never distressing.
Daily thermal sessions are practised safely by many regulars at Maji, particularly those who keep session intensity moderate. For those new to contrast therapy or pursuing intense athletic training, two to four sessions per week delivers optimal recovery benefit while allowing full systemic adaptation between visits.
Arrive well-hydrated but avoid heavy meals within two hours of beginning the circuit. Light electrolyte hydration before and during the session supports cardiovascular performance under thermal load. The Maji Kitchen provides perfectly calibrated pre-session and post-session nutritional options.
Hydrogen therapy is most effective as the final phase of the circuit. The thermal stress of sauna and cold plunge elevates oxidative load in the body — the precise state in which molecular hydrogen delivers maximum antioxidant impact. Positioning H₂ restoration at the end of the sequence ensures it works with, not against, the hormetic adaptation triggered in the earlier phases.
Individuals with uncontrolled hypertension, acute cardiovascular conditions, pregnancy beyond the first trimester, or open skin wounds should consult a physician before undertaking the full thermal circuit. Our team at Maji is trained to assist guests in modifying the protocol to accommodate individual health conditions safely.
